The ENERGY TODAY Conference was a great success with over 450 teachers from across the province in attendance. The conference focused on enlightening our teachers and their students on Nova Scotia's energy industry and how energy plays a roll in the "Our Classroom- Our World".
Nova Scotia's province-wide ENERGY TODAY Conference & Pavilion was held October 23rd at Lockview High School in Fall River, Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Social Studies Teachers Association (SSTA) and the Energy for Students program (EFS) combined to provide an exciting professional development conference that is designed to ensure that Nova Scotia teacher’s engage in the latest and most current issues surrounding the topic of “ENERGY”. The conference saw over 450 teachers province wide gather to hear the latest information on Energy and its direct effect on our province, classrooms and the world we live in today. Each teacher is responsible to carry this message back to over 200 of their students resulting in over 120,000 students receiving the “ENERGY” message.
Sponsors were provided an exhibit booth in the ENERGY TODAY Pavilion area to showcase their products & services to the teachers and educators throughout the day and as they mingled for scheduled refreshment breaks, and lunch. The Pavilion was located in the main corridor of Lockview High School enroute to the many panel sessions scheduled around the school.
The conference featured many experts from oil & gas, renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors. Experts will speak on critical energy topics in Nova Scotia including Offshore & Onshore Drilling programs, Natural Gas opportunities, Wind, Solar, Tidal & Wave, Geothermal energy alternatives and their related career pathways. Teachers left the conference well equipped to engage their students in energy education and assist them in critical thinking.
This year’s ENERGY TODAY Conference provided various best-teaching practices to enhance student achievement. Teachers had an opportunity to participate in practical sessions, including tours of an offshore supply base, helicopter ditching simulator, wind turbine, an oil refinery, or an eco-friendly office building.
