By all measures – air emissions, solid wastes, water pollution and water consumption – natural gas is the best energy alternative for today. Methane, the chief component of natural gas, is cleaner than alternative fossil fuels. When burned, it only gives off carbon dioxide and water. Natural gas produces only about half the carbon dioxide given off coal and two-thirds the amount given off by oil. And it does not emit sulfur pollutants or soot when it burns.
