Geothermal
About three per cent of Nova Scotia’s energy is generated from the earth. Conventional earth or geothermal energy from hot springs does not exist in Nova Scotia. However there are about eight mine-water based heat pump systems in the Springhill area that use warm water from the depths of abandoned coal mines as a source of heat.
Groundwater and ground-source heat pumps have been installed in a number of institutional and commercial facilities throughout the province. A number of homes also use this technology. Generally ground-source heat pumps are most cost effective in buildings that must heat and cool for effective climate control.
