Electrical Power

It is important for Nova Scotia to have an electrical energy supply that is secure, reliable, affordable, and produced in an environmentally responsible manner.

Nova Scotia’s electrical industry is dominated by Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), a subsidiary of Emera Inc. NSPI generates electricity for the province using wind, hydro, tidal, coal, natural gas and oil.

Wind

There are currently two Nova Scotia Power-operated wind turbines, located in Grand Etang and Little Brook. NSPI is investing heavily in wind and are currently involved with the development of wind farms across the province.

Hydro

Nova Scotia Power has 33 hydro plants, generating up to 360 megawatts of electricity, located on 17 hydro river systems.

Tidal

The Annapolis tidal plant is North America’s first and only tidal plant and can produce up to 20 megawatts of power. NSPI purchases renewable energy (including wind, hydro and biomass) from independent power producers each year.

Coal

Four coal-fired plants are located in Sydney, Point Aconi, Point Tupper and Trenton.

Natural Gas and Oil

The Tufts Cove plant in Dartmouth has the ability to switch between oil and natural gas. Seven oil-fired combustion turbine units are located in Victoria Junction, Tusket and Burnside.

Electric heat is a popular home heating option for Nova Scotians. It offers convenience, eliminates combustion or fuel-storage concerns and provides predictable pricing.
